U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Reaches Pinnacle Suffolk County, NY - (15 May 2006) The highest achievement a Naval Sea Cadet can attain is the rank of Chief Petty Officer (CPO). At a promotion board held in early April, Christopher R Hayes, age 17 from Garden City, NY was promoted to his new rank, becoming the first Naval Sea Cadet to hold the title in the Liberty AGTR-5 Division. Only 1 percent of the USNSCC's 10,000 cadets receive this appointment, which was approved by Capt. Michael Ford, Executive Director of the US Naval Sea Cadet Corps in Arlington, VA. CPO Hayes joined the U.S. Naval Sea Cadets five years ago, while attending the Eighth Grade. During these last five years, he has consistently maintained an above average GPA; currently his GPA at Kellenberg Memorial High School is a perfect "A". His extra curricular participation at Kellenberg include varsity football, and Captain of the varsity tennis team. The Naval Sea Cadet program promotes values that include citizenship and excellence in education, which Hayes has admirably demonstrated. Hayes is a Plank Owner (in nautical terminology, a plank owner is a member of the initial crew or complement of a ship or station) of the Liberty (AGTR-5) Division. He has held leadership positions as Company Commander, Leading Petty Officer (LPO) and Division Master at Arms (MAA). The Naval Sea Cadet program promotes leadership values. "We especially stress leadership here in Liberty AGTR-5 Division." said LTjg Forrest Woodward, Commanding Officer of the Division. "Hayes deserves this position and I am glad to see him be the first CPO of this Division. With his promotion to CPO, he attains another milestone, he is not only the First CPO of Liberty (AGTR-5) Division, but he is the Only Active Chief Petty Officer in Region 032, which consists of five separate Divisions in the New York metropolitan area and Region 032." CPO Hayes is also the Leading Petty Officer Liaison to the Region. CPO Hayes has been admitted as a Freshman Class of SUNY Maritime starting in the Fall of 2006 where he intends on majoring in Business and Marketing. He has already applied for the NAVY Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) and intends are making Naval Aviation his career choice. CPO Hayes credits his success to his parents, his teachers and especially the Officers of the Naval Sea Cadet Corps. Without there help and assistance, he believes he would never have become a Chief Petty Officer and be prepared to undertake the adventures that await him at SUNY Maritime.
