Local Navy League Council Provides Support for Naval Sea Cadets

New York City - 1 July 2006: The NY Council of the Navy League reaffirmed its support for the Liberty AGTR-5 Division of the US Naval Sea Cadets Corp this week.

In a letter this week, Rick T. Kenney, the Executive Director of the New York Council, advised the Liberty AGTR-5 Division that "our President, Dr. Daniel M. Thys, has reiterated his personal support for the Liberty Division, as well as for your commitment and fine work to make the most of your students’ Sea Cadet Corps experience."

"As tangible evidence of our assistance, I am enclosing a check  to assist in expenses for bus transportation, uniform equipment and drill rifles", wrote Kenney.  This assistance is just a beginning in pursuit of the programs that the Liberty AGTR-5 Division seeks.

The US Naval League is the parent organization to the US Naval Sea Cadets.  While the Navy League provides budget and other tangible support for the nation-wide program, it is up to the local units, called Divisions, to seek out sponsorship in their local communities to assist in providing the widest range of activities for the young men and women who join the Naval Sea Cadets.

According to Lt jg Forrest Woodward, Commanding Officer of the Liberty AGTR-5 Division, "the acknowledgement by the New York Council of their support will go a long way in assisting this Division  in attaining our goals.  This is just one of our first steps toward enhancing our training, further development of our Color Guard and  moving toward establishing a Drill Team.  The teamwork , discipline and attention to detail that  our  training, and programs such as the Drill Team provide is invaluable to our Cadets."

Some of the other  programs that are in the planning stages include an Amateur (Ham) Radio instruction so that all interested Cadets (and Parents) can sit for their FCC Amateur Radio Technician's License, the entry level license required to use a Ham Radio.  Other local on-going programs include navigation and chart reading, a program that would cost the cadets in excess of $2,000.00 if they took it on their own.

"Each and every program that our Cadets participate in, returns dividends not only to the community, but to the Cadet themselves outside of the Naval Sea Cadet Corps.  We have seen time and time again improved grades, improved behavior and our Cadets excelling as they move onto adulthood," said LTjg Woodward.

In addition to needing financial support, the Liberty (AGTR-5) Division needs adult volunteers to come forward and assist the Division in building responsible young men and women.  Prior military service in not required (but is appreciated).  By joining the US Naval Sea Cadet program as an adult, you will be entitled to wear the uniform and receive the respect that a US Naval Officer receives by the public.

The U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps (NSCC) is a nationwide organization dedicated to helping American youth realize personal success and achievement through a nautically oriented training program. Through Sea Cadet leadership, young Americans ages 13 through 17 develop interest and skill in basic seamanship and its naval adaptations, while learning the value of patriotism, courage, self reliance, teamwork and accountability, and the value of education.  Continued success and participation in the NSCC is dependent on maintaining good grades in school.

Membership in the Sea Cadets allows teenagers to sample military life with no obligation to join any branch of the armed forces. Should cadets decide to enlist in the Navy or Coast Guard, their training may allow them entry at an advance paygrade. The Naval Sea Cadet Corps affords equal opportunity for participation to all young Americans regardless of race, color, religion or sex.
