Liberty (AGTR-5) Division bring cheer to Hospitalized Veterans on Veterans Day
[corrected copy 21 Dec 2006]

Amityville, NY - (13 November 2006):  When the members of the Liberty (AGTR-5) Division of the Naval Sea Cadets get a request from the Navy, which is normally a rare event, they don't ask many questions, they just respond.

CDR Jake Schneider, the Commanding Officer, US Navy Operational Support Center located in Amityville, NY requested help with giving cheer and companionship to the veterans at Northport Veterans Administration Hospital over the Veterans Day weekend.

The Cadets  mustered at the last minute; along with some of their parents;  responded.  Led by the Executive Officer, LTjg Joy Ametti, NSCC and the Regional Director, LCDR  Rick Ametti, NSCC the cadets arrived at the VA Hospital at 0800.

The project:  Assist the fraternal organization the Mason's with fulfillment of their yearly "good deed".  This year, it was the production of bags filled with socks, toiletries and skull caps for the veterans who are patients in the Hospital.

The group of volunteers distributed their bag of cheer, along with a kind heart and an interest in the Vet's welfare to a very appreciative group of America's greatest, the Veterans of our Armed Forces.  While some of the Vets were not coherent, those that were could not express their gratitude to these volunteers.

The Cadets were invited to participate any Sunday in assisting the Vets and the Hospital Staff in the ever daunting logistical movement of the patients from the Hospital to the Chapel for Church Services.

SR VINCENT LA MANNA, who attends Our Lady of Perpetual High SchoolLTjg Ametti, commenting on her day, said "We arrived by 0800, and  left there around 12:30. A busy busy, but very rewarding day!!"

The U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps (NSCC) is a nationwide organization dedicated to helping American youth realize personal success and achievement through a nautically oriented training program. Through Sea Cadet leadership, young Americans ages 13 through 17 develop interest and skill in basic seamanship and its naval adaptations, while learning the value of patriotism, courage, self reliance, teamwork and accountability, and the value of education.  Continued success and participation in the NSCC is dependent on maintaining good grades in school.

Should cadets decide to enlist in the Navy or Coast Guard, their training may allow them entry at an advance paygrade. The Naval Sea Cadet Corps affords equal opportunity for participation to all young Americans regardless of race, color, religion or sex.
